Senator lauds jeweler for ethical choice

The launch of the "Made in Botswana" diamond brand has met with much success at Day's Jewelers, a chain of six stores in New Hampshire and Maine.

Portland, Me.--U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine recently lauded retailer Day's Jewelers on its choice to carry responsibly sourced diamonds.

According to a recent news release, in a letter to the chain, Snow congratulated the store for its involvement with Motiganz Diamonds' "Made in Botswana" diamond brand.

"What a source of pride it must be that you are the first jeweler in the nation to undertake this endeavor as a pilot project," the letter read. "You are to be commended for being on the cutting-edge of combining commerce and conscience."

Day's Jewelers, led by President Jeff Corey, started carrying the Made in Botswana brand late last year, hosting a party at his Portland, Me., store to mark the launch of the program.

The Made in Botswana brand features diamonds sourced, cut and polished by Motiganz Diamonds in Botswana and utilizes local people and resources thereby helping to empower the people of this nation in southern Africa.

The Gem Certification and Assurance Laboratory grades the stones using its Gemprint technology, which essentially creates a fingerprint for diamonds to make them traceable throughout the pipeline.

"Day's Jewelers 'Made in Botswana' initiative is just one of the many demonstrations that jewelers do care," Corey said. "American people are accustomed to giving a diamond to their betrothed to symbolize an eternal relationship and it sure does feel good when they know that purchasing that diamond helped to alleviate poverty, disease and despair."
