New York--The Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC) recognized new board members at its annual luncheon on Jan. 9, held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

New board members include Jeffrey Bilgore of Jeffrey Bilgore LLC, Terry Chandler of the Diamond Council of America, David W. Cochran of Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America and David Pillow of Zale Corp.

The JVC also announced that Gemological Institute of America President Donna Baker will replace Ralph Destino, who is retiring.

In addition, the JVC awarded its prestigious Stanley Schechter Award to Sue Saarnio, the U.S. State Department's former special advisor for conflict diamonds.

The organization also released its new Essential Guide to Advertising Law.

More than 140 jewelry industry leaders were in attendance at the luncheon, as well as JVC Chairman Elis Haas, current JVC board members and New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, who delivered the keynote address.

DiNapoli urged the JVC to let New York State Governor David Paterson know its concerns. He also saluted the JVC's focus on ethics, noting "ethics is something we all have to take greater care of and pay more attention to."

Founded in 1917, the JVC is a non-profit, legal trade association, which maintains the jewelry industry's highest ethical standards. The organization offers dispute mediation and arbitration services for the trade and consumers, compliance monitoring and precious-metals testing, among many other services.
