Two suspects shot in attempted jewelry robbery

Phoenix--The owner of a Phoenix jewelry store shot and wounded two men during an attempted robbery at his store on Monday, the Arizona Republic reports.

According to the Republic, the incident started at about 2:00 p.m. when the suspects, identified in the newspaper as 24-year-old Gregory Mills and 27-year-old Jason Buckingham, allegedly entered the store to sell a watch.

The storeowner refused to purchase the watch because it was missing links, and both men left.

According to the Republic, the pair returned about 10 minutes later and, police believe, they proceeded to pepper spray the owner in the face and used a metal baton to smash open a display case. The storeowner pulled out a handgun and opened fire, apparently in self-defense, hitting each suspect once and then holding them at gunpoint until police arrived, according to what police told the Republic.

According to the Republic, the storeowner was not being charged with a crime because investigators determined he acted in self-defense, but the county attorney's office will review the case and make a final determination regarding charges.

The storeowner, along with Mills and Buckingham, sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Both suspects were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

This is the second such incident in a month in Arizona.

According to story published online on Dec. 23 by the Republic, the owner of Christopher Diamonds in Chandler, Ariz., was shot in the face after a shootout erupted when two men attempted to rob his store on Dec. 20.

The owner was sent to a local hospital, where he was expected to recover.

One of the suspects later died from his injuries, while the other was booked into jail on charges of possessing a firearm as a prohibited possessor, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery and murder in the first degree during a crime.
