WJA awards 28 educational member grants

New York--In an effort to contribute financially to the ongoing education of women in the jewelry, watch and related industries, the Women's Jewelry Association (WJA) Member Grant Program has awarded a total of $14,000 to 28 members across the country.

The 2009 recipients included:

--Ann Arnold (Metro Chapter)
--Julia Behrends, Sara Onderdonk, Marilyn Salvatore (New England Chapter)
--Constance Berry (Southeast Chapter)
--Ann Fagin (Northern California Chapter)
--Kathleen Hammond, Nancy Kuhl (Midwest Chapter)
--Valerie Heck, Odaybea Morrow (D.C. Chapter).
--Emily Johnson (Twin Cities Chapter)
-- Jill Prantera, Lisa Slovis-Mandel, Peggy Tsiamis, Kimberly Vagner (San Diego Chapter)
--Heather Seever (Pacific Northwest Chapter)
--Cynthia Sliwa (Los Angeles Chapter)
--Melissa Spence, Beverly Strom (Rocky Mountain Chapter)
--Suzanna Stull (Mid-Atlantic Chapter)

In addition, WJA chapters award the following grants:

--Rebecca Buys (San Diego Chapter)
--Deborah Durant (Northern California Chapter)
--Amber Erickson, Merrill Essex, Alison Newmann, Julie Schwalbe (Midwest Chapter)
--Evelyn Huang (Los Angeles Chapter)
--Carolyn Jacoby (Metro Chapter)

WJA members who submit an application are eligible for the grant selection process. Grants are awarded in amounts up to $500.

Funds for the grants are raised by the WJA in several ways, including the WJA's silent auction held during its annual Awards for Excellence gala. Additional funding comes from companies and individuals who support the WJA's mission.

Founded in 1983, the WJA is the pre-eminent association of professional women in the jewelry, watch and related businesses. Through the national organization, headquartered in Chicago Ridge, Ill., and a network of 13 regional chapters and an International Affiliate Chapter in India, members benefit from educational and networking opportunities, scholarships, design competitions, annual women's business conferences and recognition programs, such as its annual Awards for Excellence gala.
