London--The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) formally joined as a participant in the United Nations Global Compact--Civil Society on Jan. 15 to bring added value to the RJC and its members by developing synergies related to responsible business practices in the gold and diamond sectors.

The U.N. Global Compact seeks to strengthen and broaden its engagement with committed civil-society organizations that have an understanding of 10 universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption, and the expertise to translate the principles into action.

These principles are:

Human rights

Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights.

Principle 2: Businesses should make sure they're not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labor standards

Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.

Principle 4: Businesses should eliminate all forms of forced and compulsory labor.

Principle 5: Businesses should abolish child labor.

Principle 6: Businesses should eliminate discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment

Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges.

Principle 8: Businesses should undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility.

Principle 9: Businesses should encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-corruption

Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all of its forms, including extortion and bribery.

As a participant, the RJC makes a commitment to change business operations so that the Global Compact and its 10 principles become part of its strategy, culture and day-to-day operations; to publicly advocate the Global Compact and its principles via available communication channels; and to communicate annually and publicly on progress made in implementing the Global Compact principles amongst its members.

To that end, on Feb. 12, RJC Chief Executive Officer Michael Rae and RJC Vice Chairman John Hall met with Global Compact Executive Director Georg Kell and Global Compact Civil Society Coordinator Olajobi Makinwa at the U.N. headquarters in New York City to discuss corporate social responsibility and the RJC's role in advancing high ethical standards in the jewelry industry.

The RJC is a trading name of the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices.
