New York--The JA New York Winter Show wrapped up last Tuesday, with educational seminars and a general session providing tips and strategies to help retailers strengthen their brand in today's difficult market.

Through the show's general session, titled "Survive 2009/Thrive 2010," attendees listened in for the latest insight into current consumer behavior and how it projects to unfold throughout the year. Led by Nielsen Co. Vice President of Marketing James Russo and JWT Planning Strategist and Marketing Intelligence Group Director Emmy Kondo, the session encouraged retailers to invest in staff, training and additional marketing to distinguish themselves and continue to build strong relationships with customers.

Further educational seminars, including "Selling in Challenging Times," "Make Your Store Stand Out" and "How to Sell Jewelry in a Non-Jewelry Store," were found in the JA Retail Learning Center, which utilized multiple diverse learning environments and techniques in the goal of helping retailers stay competitive.

In addition to the educational offerings, highlights of the winter show included networking opportunities and pavilions offering some of the industry's best designs.

A number of awards were also presented during the show, including the Golden Apple Award, to four exhibitors demonstrating a successful marketing campaign; the America's Best Jewelers Award, to 28 distinguished independent retail jewelers for their successful retail operations; and the Couture Design Challenge. Jewelry designers participating in the latter competition were challenged to design a piece of jewelry using the iconic New York Greek coffee cup, with show attendees and online voters choosing Chad Allison as the favorite and Heather Moore as the runner-up.

As for the Golden Apple Awards, winners at the winter show included Catherine Angiel in the "Innovation" category, for her strategic branding; Elle Jewelry in the "Fusion" category, for the brand's creative marketing materials; KC Designs in the "Sparkle" category, for successfully getting its product placed on The View and other influential news broadcasts; and Angelique de Paris, in the "Viral Visionary" category, for use of online marketing, particularly for a jewelry game the company created in which visitors could try on jewelry virtually. Angelique de Paris is the first-ever winner in this new category.

"We did everything we could--from offering awards to exhibitors and showcasing the best jewelry pieces for retailers, to seminars presented by influential industry professionals--to help attendees brand themselves and gain a needed competitive edge at the JA New York Winter Show this year," JA New York Show Group Director Drew Lawsky said in a media release. "We are pleased with the results as several retailers and exhibitors commented on how great and useful the seminars were. We look forward to adding more seminars and features for future shows to help attendees with their business."
