Norwalk, Conn.--The brunt of the economic slowdown has been felt industry-wide, yet there remain pockets of retailers, manufacturers and even buying shows that continue to experience successes and announce good news.

Among the latter, the Independent Jewelers Organization (IJO) has reported record-breaking participation at its March IJO Show in Tampa.

A total of 616 stores--81 percent of its members--attended the March 7-11 show, marking a record for IJO Spring Show attendance, IJO President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Roberts said in a media release.

In addition to the strong attendance figures, organizers also reported that two exhibitors, Pandora and Fisher/LeStage, reported a record number of sales at the show.

IJO attribute the show's success to the organization's independent and member-oriented structure and its model of helping members to be profitable and successful through a wide array of methods, including training, the sharing of information and ideas between members, and the savings members receive through the IJO Buying Group.

"The goal of IJO is to help independent retail jewelry stores run their businesses more successfully and profitably," Roberts said in the release. "We are a family-oriented entity and our purpose transcends business and extends to our membership on a personal level. That is why we exist--to assist and serve our members in any way we can."

Also at the show, five retail members were awarded the Master IJO Jeweler National Recognition Award for excellence.

"Each of our five award winners have utterly astounded the entire IJO membership with their accomplishments," Roberts said. "Their knowledge, integrity and pure dedication have totally set them apart from other retail jewelers."

The winners are: Mike and Cathy Fleck of Occasions Fine Jewelry in Midland, Texas, for Best Family Diamond Store; Corey Miller of Leighton's Jewelers in Merced, Calif., for Superior Customer Service; Dave Salkin of Salkin's Jewel Case in Freehold, N.J., for Community Leadership; Mary Ball Gorman of Henry B. Ball Jewelers in Akron, Ohio, for Ultimate Gem and Jewelry Education; and Sherrie and David Rabellino of The Artful Eye in Prescott, Ariz., for Superlative Design and Innovation.

The IJO Summer Show will be held July 18-22 in Charlotte, N.C.
