Arizona jeweler wounded in attempted robbery

Chandler, Ariz.--A retail jeweler was shot in the face and an alleged robber killed after a shootout erupted in the midst of an attempted robbery at an Arizona jewelry store, according to media reports.

The incident began at about 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, The Arizona Republic reports, when two armed men entered Christopher Diamonds in Chandler, Ariz., with the intent to rob the store.

The storeowner, his wife and adult son were in the store at the time.

According to the newspaper, the owner pulled out a gun and a gun battle ensued.

The owner and one of the suspects, identified by the Chandler Police Department as 46-year-old Kevin William Murray of El Mirage, Ariz., were shot. Murray fled the scene, jumped in a stolen trunk and drove a distance before pulling over. He later died from his wound, according to the Republic.

The other suspect, identified by police as Kenneth Wayne Simpson Jr., 27, of Phoenix, fled on foot before a police dog working with officers helped police catch up to him at about 8:15 p.m.

According to police, Simpson was booked into Maricopa County Jail for possessing a firearm as a prohibited possessor, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery and murder in the first degree during a crime.

The storeowner, who was not identified, was sent to a local hospital and is expected to recover, according to the Republic.
