Ventura, Calif.--In early February, Southern California-based retail jeweler Fox Fine Jewelry gave away 200 sterling silver necklaces to people who had lost their jobs or their homes.

After witnessing a flood of traffic, owner Debbie Fox decided to reach out to her buying group, and now 45 independent jewelers will participate in giving away at least 100 necklaces each.

The jewelers are all part of the Independent Jewelers Organization and are spread across every part of the nation. As a group, they will be giving away at least 4,500 necklaces to people who have lost their jobs or their homes.

"We have come together as a group to give back to our communities," the jewelers said in a media release. "So many people have lost their jobs or homes, and can't afford to give a gift for Valentine's Day. There are women whose spirits would be lifted by wearing a new, special necklace, but could never buy it for themselves at this time. We want to help. So we are giving away these necklaces."

The necklaces are crafted in sterling silver and are valued at up to $99 each. Each piece will come in a jewelry box; gift-wrapping will be added, if desired. To claim their necklace, individuals need to bring in their job termination or foreclosure notice, as well as personal identification.

"Every person who loses their job or their home experiences extreme difficulty," Fox said in the release. "May our gifts be a symbol for what each of us can do. May our actions touch those that can give, whether of time or money, to those that are in need."
