Modern Jeweler suspends publication

New York--Industry trade publication Modern Jeweler is suspending publication, the magazine announced on Monday.

After 108 years of publication, the August issue will be the last, unless a buyer is found.

In a statement published on the magazine's Web site on Tuesday, publisher Tim Murphy and editor-in-chief Cheryl Kremkow extended thanks to all the people who worked on the magazine over the years, as well as to the retailers and manufacturers who shared their expertise with readers each month.

"We hope to find a buyer who believes in the future of the jewelry industry as much as we do," their statement reads. "But even if we don't, and the August issue of Modern Jeweler is truly the last, we are sure that the jewelry industry's strong community and generosity of spirit will ensure its recovery is swift and its future is bright. We'll certainly miss being there to cover it."

Modern Jeweler and Lustre were just two of the four titles shuttered by Cygnus Business Media on Monday, a company spokeswoman confirmed to National Jeweler.

The New York-based publishing company laid off a total of 50 people amid the shutdowns.
