JIC to honor Madeleine Albright at GEM Awards

October 09, 2009

New York--The Jewelry Information Center (JIC), the consumer public relations and marketing arm of Jewelers of America, will honor former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright with the Style Award at its eighth annual GEM Awards gala, scheduled for Jan. 8 at Gotham in New York City.

Dr. Albright made history in 1997, when she was named the first female Secretary of State, the highest-ranking woman in the U.S. government. She currently serves as chair of Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategy firm helping clients navigate the intersection between business, finance, government and civil society in markets around the world.

While serving in President Bill Clinton's administration--first as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and then as Secretary of State--Dr. Albright brought attention to the significance of fine jewelry by wearing brooches that purposefully reflected her views about the situation at hand.

Dr. Albright's passion for jewelry is documented in her new book, Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box, and the supporting Museum of Arts and Design exhibition, Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection. Both explore jewelry as a diplomatic, political and social tool.

The exhibition examines the collection for its historic significance as well as the expressive power of jewelry and its ability to communicate through a style and language of its own. On display are more than 200 pins, many of which Dr. Albright wore to communicate a message during her diplomatic tenure.

"Jewelry is one of the strongest forms of non-verbal communication. Each of Dr. Albright's pins reflects a significant moment in her life and in the history of our nation's politics. We are so honored that Dr. Albright will share her stories and style with us at a very special GEM Awards," JIC GEM Awards Chairman Martin Gatins said in a media release.

The JIC's GEM Awards recognizes the outstanding achievements of individuals and companies whose work raises the visibility and status of fine jewelry and watches. For the 2010 event, National Jeweler will also present its 2010 Retailer Hall of Fame awards.

Tickets and sponsorship packages are on sale now. To make a reservation, visit JIC.org.
