Jeweler's son shot dead at N.J. jewelry store

Kearny, N.J.--Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man who was reportedly the son of a New Jersey jewelry storeowner and was shot dead in the store during a robbery on Tuesday morning, according to various news reports.

The incident happened about 8:30 a.m. at Rachel Jewelers in Kearny, N.J. Two robbers entered the store and fought with Javier Equavara, 47, who was shot as many as three times, according to a report on New York's Fox 5 Web site.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio told the news station that the two robbers grabbed a couple of cases of jewels and ran off.

The father of the man who was shot was buying a pastry a few doors down when the shooting happened, according to a report in The Jersey Journal. A woman who owned the pastry shop told the paper that one of her customers entered the shop, alarmed after seeing two men race from the jewelry store a few doors down.

The pastry shop owner and the father ran over to the jewelry store and saw the son dead on the floor in a doorway, according to the newspaper. The victim's mother was already inside the store.

Police located security camera video that shows two men getting into a green car nearby driven by a third man, according to Fox 5.
