Chicago Jewelers Association issues crime alert

Chicago--The Chicago Jewelers Association (CJA) has issued a crime alert urging jewelers in Minnesota and the surrounding states to be on the lookout for a male Hispanic trying to sell a very heavy link chain that appears to be 18-karat white gold.

According to the CJA, the suspect is a male Hispanic in his early thirties with black hair. He is using a Florida driver's license with the name David Enrique Colon.

The suspect visits stores that buy gold and offers to sell the chain, which is stamped "eighteen karat" on the clasp, according to the CJA.

The CJA said "this chain is not gold." It is a hi-tech alloy created to fool common testers and to look and feel like 18-karat white gold.

According to the CJA, it appears the suspect has a number of identical chains because there are at least three well-regarded jewelers who have purchased one from him.
