Cyanide poisoning causes jeweler's death

Edison, N.J.--Police have confirmed that the jeweler found dead inside his New Jersey store back in June succumbed to acute cyanide poisoning.

Sushil Bhalla, owner of Aabhushan Family Jewelers in Edison, N.J., was found unconscious in the bathroom of his store by one of his employees on the afternoon of June 15.

At the time, police stated a chemical believed to be cyanide was found in the room where Bhalla passed out and died, but they had to wait for toxicology tests to determine if cyanide poisoning was the sole cause of his death or if there were other contributing factors, such as a medical condition.

Earlier this week, Lt. Sal Filannino of the Edison Police Department confirmed Bhalla did die of acute cyanide poisoning.

He inhaled the chemical while apparently cleaning some jewelry in the store, Filannino said.

It is unknown whether poor ventilation, the amount of cyanide being used or another factor was what caused Bhalla's death.

"Whatever he did with it normally, he didn't do this time," Filannino said.

Aabhushan is a five-generation, family-owned operation that is "predominately known as a leading manufacturer," according to the company's Web site, although the company also has three retail stores--the Edison store and stores in Somerset, N.J., and in Dublin, Ohio--and sells through its Web site.

The company specializes in Indian-inspired 22- and 24-karat gold pieces, as well as diamond jewelry.
