South Dakota jeweler to close after 81 years

Sioux Falls, S.D.--A third-generation Sioux Falls, S.D., jeweler is closing shop and liquidating its merchandise, in a move the jeweler told a local paper was a personal choice that had nothing to do with the economic downturn.

Ann Horwitz Jewelers, which sold jewelry and gifts for 81 years, is going out of business, according to a report in the Argus Leader, a newspaper based in Sioux Falls. The owner, Ann Horwitz, told the paper she simply wanted to do something new.

"The business has been very good to me," Horwitz told the paper, adding that the best part of the profession was meeting and forming long-lasting relationships with customers.

The entire inventory will be liquidated in her shop on West 49th Street, which was known as Horwitz Jewelers when it was downtown. Price reductions of up to 60 percent off its inventory will be offered.

In the early 20th century, there were four family jewelers in Sioux Falls, and for decades there have been only two: Ann Horwitz Jewelers and Bechtold Jewelry, the newspaper reports.

The only jeweler now remaining in Sioux Falls is Bechtold Jewelry, which opened in 1902.
