Jeweler, talk show raising money for 9/11 fund

September 11, 2009
Philadelphia jeweler Steven Singer hopes to raise more than a million dollars for the Flight 93 National Memorial Fund through sales of this pin he created.

Philadelphia--Jeweler Steven Singer is teaming up with a nationally syndicated, radio talk show host with the goal of raising more than a million dollars for the Flight 93 National Memorial Fund via a commemorative pin.

According to a release from Steven Singer Jewelers, Singer appeared on Michael Smerconish's radio show on Aug. 28 to unveil the design of his Commemorative 9/11 pin and make it available for the first time to the public.

Smerconish is a Philadelphia radio talk show host and author.

The cost of the pin is $10, and 100 percent of the proceeds go to the memorial fund.

According to the release, within hours, 1,000 pins had been sold and, to date, the partnership has raised more than $10,000 for the fund.

The first of the checks was slated to be presented directly to the Flight 93 National Memorial on Sept. 11.

In addition, Smerconish, who authored a book called Instinct: The Man Who Stopped the 20th Hijacker, orchestrated a sold-out bus trip on Sept. 11 to the Flight 93 crash site that included the subject of Smerconish's book, Jose Melendez-Perez.

According to news sources, Melendez-Perez was working as an immigration inspector at the Orlando International Airport in August 2001 when he prevented a Saudi man from entering the United States, a man investigators believe was supposed to be the fifth hijacker aboard United Airlines Flight 93.

Smerconish and Singer gifted the pin and the book to President Barack Obama, and Singer also gave the pin to Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and all major news organizations.

The pin can also be purchased in person at Steven Singer Jewelers in Philadelphia.
