Suds up (again) at Steven Singer

June 25, 2009

Philadelphia--Steven Singer Jewelers continued its out-of-the-box marketing efforts this morning, with a squeaky-clean giveaway worth more than $40,000.

For the fourth year in a row, storeowner Steven Singer filled his store with bubbles to create the "World's Largest Bubble Bath," a contest in which 16 contestants--15 women and one guy--wade through six feet of bubbles with the hopes of finding plastic eggs filled with prizes.

According to a release from Steven Singer, this year's prizes include a Harley Davidson 500CC Buell Motorcyle valued at more than $5,000, cosmetic surgery services valued at $5,000, a vacation package to Cancun, Mexico, a 52-inch LCD TV valued at $2,000 and $10,000 in jewelry and engagement rings.

It is the contest's largest prize package in history.

While some retailers are cutting back their marketing budgets due to the economy, the release states that Steven Singer believes holding events such as the bubble bath are "the key to surviving in a tough economy."

The entire bubble bath was broadcasted live on Thursday morning on Philadelphia radio station Sportsradio 610WIP.

Located in Center City Philadelphia on historic Jewelers Row, Steven Singer Jewelers has been in business for almost 29 years.

The store and its owner, who was featured in a 2007 Wall Street Journal article for his irreverent "I hate Steven Singer" advertisements, which were noted as a good campaign for attracting young men to the store to buy engagement rings, are known for their unusual marketing tactics.

According to the release, since the Wall Street Journal article ran in 2007, Steven Singer has experienced a 400 percent increase in annual volume, which he mostly attributes to online sales.
