Iconic bridal retailer to host market discussion

November 04, 2009

New York--Kleinfeld Bridal co-owner Mara Urshel and bridal fashion editor Juli Alvarez will host a discussion on Nov. 11 detailing bridal gown fashions, bridal market practices, how the economy affects the bridal market and the role of print and digital publishing in this retail category.

Urshel, who has more than 30 years of experience developing and marketing luxury merchandise, is considered one of the best-known and respected executives in the retail apparel industry, according to a media release.

She spent 20 years at Saks Fifth Avenue, where she was senior vice president and general merchandise manager responsible for the merchandising and logistics of 28 new Saks store locations.

She was subsequently employed by Casual Corner Group and Geoffrey Beene Co. in executive management positions and served as the only American on the merchandising board of Japanese retail giant Seibu Department Stores.

Since purchasing Kleinfeld Bridal with Ronald Rothstein and Wayne Rogers, the bridal retailer has enjoyed surging sales and success, the release states. Urshel currently devotes all of her time to managing the Kleinfeld business along with Rothstein, and has been involved in all aspects of planning, building and launching the 35,000-square-foot Kleinfeld flagship store in Manhattan as well as expanding the Kleinfeld brand nationally and internationally.

A 15-year veteran of the bridal fashion business, Alvarez began her career in 1992 as a design and public relations associate for bridal designer Vera Wang.

In 2001, following a two-year stint as public relations director for fashion designer Richard Tyler, Alvarez became fashion and beauty editor at Elegant Bride magazine, which, in 2003, was the first bridal publication to be nominated for a National Magazine Award.

Alvarez was most recently fashion editor at the highly revered and longstanding Modern Bride magazine.

The discussion will be held at Kleinfelds, located at 110 W. 20th St., between 6th and 7th Avenues, in New York City. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m., with the discussion and a tour of the store between 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. The cost is $10 for members, $20 for non-members and guests, and water and soda will be available.
