Shaill takes the gold in 'Best Of' contest

Judges selected Shaill's 18-karat gold cuff accented with diamonds and enamel as the winner of the "Best Of" contest for gold jewelry. The one-of-a-kind piece hails from the designer's "Couture Collection."

New York--Shaill has been named the winner of National Jeweler's June "Best Of" contest for gold jewelry.

The New York-based designer's 18-karat gold cuff accented with diamonds and enamel caught the eye of National Jeweler's panel of judges, including jewelry editors Victoria Gomelsky and Lorraine DePasque, as well as the Jewelry Information Center's Amanda Gizzi.

Designer Shaill Jhaveri says he draws inspiration from his youth in India and recent travels to the Far East, and he describes his 18-karat gold pieces, including the winning cuff, as "cross cultural contemporary."

"Clean silhouettes and styles reflect hints of Eastern cultures, Sanskrit texts and exotic lands," Shaill wrote of his designs. "The cuff here uses the word 'Ankurit,' meaning a spiritual beginning or awakening."

Judges also chose four designers, K. Mita Design, Lattis Design, Milus and Nina Basharova, as finalists in the contest.

K. Mita Design was selected for a cuff from its "Moire" collection crafted in 18-karat yellow gold and oxidized sterling silver. The design explores both positive and negative spaces as well as the effects of overlapping patterns.

Lattis Design was named a finalist for its "Verve Bangle Bracelet," an 18-karat and 14-karat gold design accented with channel-set rings of yellow and blue sapphires. Inspired by aerodynamics and patterns in nature, the design is a complex system of moving links.

Swiss watch brand Milus was selected as a finalist not for a timepiece, but for its 18-karat pink gold "Kamasutra Butterfly" cuff links. The cuff links take the form of a mechanical watch movement featuring a moving rotor decorated with cloisonne and a second enamel technique, champleve, in which troughs are carved into the surface of an object and filled with enamel.

Nina Basharova's "Milky Way" collection bangles were also added to the finalists' circle. Crafted in 18-karat gold and featuring a repeated circle motif, the bangles can be worn alone or stacked.

Online voters in a second category selected Ana Cavalheiro Fine Jewelry as the winner of the "People Choice" award for gold. The designer's entry, the handmade "Blue Castle Ring," is crafted in 18-karat gold and features a 30.65-carat blue topaz center stone and 3.45 carats of blue topaz as accent stones.

Nina Basharova's Milky Way bangles were a runner-up in the category, as was Elizabeth Showers' "Maltese Flex Bangle," a large 18-karat yellow gold bangle accented with 3 carats of diamonds.

"The number of entries we received evidenced the continued love for gold among designers," National Jeweler Editorial Director Whitney Sielaff says. "Pieces demonstrated both technical prowess and imaginative application in categories from cuffs to cuff links. Gold continues to prove itself amazingly versatile."
