IGI launches gold assaying service in India

September 25, 2009

Mumbai, India--The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has announced the launch of a specialized gold assaying service at its facility in Mumbai, India.

According to a news release, this marks India's first one-stop certification lab for diamond and gold jewelry.

The service, available at the standard BIS rate, will first launch in Mumbai and then expand to other locations throughout India.

Benefits of the gold assaying service include speed and a simple and inclusive pricing structure for both diamond certification and gold assaying.

The IGI mark will be lasered onto every piece of jewelry that comes through the assaying service.

According to the release, hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in gold and is used in many countries as a guarantee of purity or fineness of gold jewelry.

The IGI India assaying service consists of five components: BIS Mark (a mark Indian consumers accept that indicates the purity of gold jewelry), the fineness number (corresponding to the given caratage), the Assaying and Hallmarking Centre's mark, the jeweler's mark and the year of marking denoted by a code letter decided by BIS (i.e., "A" for 2000, "B" for 2001, etc.)

"We are the first international certification body to officially offer a one-stop solution for diamond certification and gold hallmarking. Introduced to help alleviate some of the tight deadlines our customers, in particular, have to work under, this service offers the most comprehensive range of diamond certification and gold hallmarking services under one roof," Tehmasp Printer, managing director of IGI-India, said in the release.
