Diamond industry to continue business in Mumbai

Mumbai, India--Condolences and messages of support continue to pour forth for those affected by last week's terrorist attacks in the diamond manufacturing center of Mumbai, India.

Mark Boston, chairman of London-based diamond brokerage H. Goldie and Co. Ltd., was at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel at the time of the attacks and managed to flee down the fire escape to the relative safety of a neighboring hotel.

In a blog posted on Tuesday at HGoldie.Blogspot.com, Boston shares his experience and encourages people to continue to visit Mumbai and do business there, just as Americans did in New York following 9/11.

"Mumbai has supported you and your business in the past and never has it needed your support more than today," Boston writes. "If you are still worried about traveling, several of the leading Indian diamond companies now have completely interactive B2B Web sites and can provide you with all the diamonds and jewelry you need."

Also on Tuesday, the Rapaport Group released a statement expressing "sincere condolences" to those affected by the attacks and pledging its continuing support for Mumbai's position as a vital hub in the diamond world.

"The Rapaport Group pledges its support for the spirit of Mumbai, and we will continue to expand our offices and presence in Mumbai," the statement reads. "We will continue to support the Mumbai diamond industry through these challenging times."

The Diamond Trading Co. (DTC) reported on Monday that all diamond industry players who had been attending a DTC meeting at the Taj hotel, one of the hotels targeted in the 60-hour rampage, had managed to escape harm during the attacks.

On Tuesday, the Web site for JCK magazine reported that Rohinton B. Maloo, the first India representative for JCK magazine and the JCK show, was among those killed in the attacks.

According to JCK, he was at a dinner meeting in the Oberoi Hotel, which is located adjacent to the Taj hotel and also was a target of the terrorists, when the attackers forcibly entered the dining room and opened fire.

It is unknown if Maloo was meeting diamond industry representatives who were in Mumbai for the DTC meeting at the time of the attacks.

According to JCK, the 48-year-old Maloo most recently served as managing director of Cutting Edge Media and as a consultant for a mobile solutions company.

His wife and two children survive him.
