FICCI offers growth plan for Indian jewelry industry

Mumbai, India--The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry's (FICCI) Gems and Jewellery Committee recently held a meeting in Mumbai, India, where they elected fresh leadership and unveiled plans for confronting the Indian jewelry industry's challenges in the coming year.

According to a press release, Mehul Choksi, chairman and managing director of the Gitanjali Group, was elected chairman of FICCI's jewelry committee for a second term.

The Gitanjali Group is the Indian retailer and manufacturer that operates the Samuels Jewelers and Rogers Jewelers chains through Gitanjali USA.

In addition, Prasad Kapre, managing director of Blue Skies Business Management Group, a consulting agency that provides services including business planning, marketing and training, became co-chairman of FICCI's jewelry committee for the coming year.

Kapre has more than 14 years of experience in the jewelry industry.

In addition to electing leadership at the Mumbai meeting, members of FICCI's jewelry committee also unveiled their agenda for growth in the coming year.

FICCI's plans include:

--Using a knowledge-driven approach, acting as an interface between the Indian government and the jewelry industry.
--Setting up periodic meetings pushing for policy change at the highest level.
--Hosting an international conference in December 2009 in Mumbai that will focus on the transformation of the gems and jewelry industry in India.
--Striving to play a central role in taking the Indian jewelry industry to the next level.
--Becoming a platform for the Indian jewelry industry to voice concerns and supporting industry activities that lead to overall development.

Based in New Delhi, India, FICCI is the "rallying point for free enterprises in India" and empowers Indian businesses to shore up their competitiveness and enhance their global reach, according to its Web site.

FICCI has a nationwide membership of more than 1,500 corporations, more than 500 Chambers of Commerce and business associations.
