Online retail sales down 1 percent in 2Q

August 11, 2009

Reston, Va.--U.S. online retail spending continued to show a lack of growth in the second quarter, decreasing 1 percent to $30.2 billion compared with the same period last year, according to the latest report from ComScore Inc.

The second quarter of 2009 represents only the second quarter on record where e-commerce spending has been lower than the same quarter the previous year, ComScore said.

"The marginally negative growth in the second quarter, on the heels of flat growth in the first quarter, signals that online retail spending has yet to turn the corner after a disappointing end to last year," ComScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni said in a media release. "Unfortunately, it appears that the reality of nearly 10 percent unemployment and rising gas prices, coupled with an increased savings rate, continues to hold down consumers' discretionary spending and it may still take some time to dig our way out of this recession."

The fastest-growing online retail category in the second quarter of 2009 versus a year ago was toys and hobbies, which increased 21 percent, followed by books and magazines (up 17 percent) and video games, consoles and accessories (up 15 percent).
