Heartsmith takes Facebook app a step further

Allows users to make virtual lockets real

September 24, 2009

Haworth, N.J.--Facebook users have long been able to send friends on the social-networking site virtual gifts, such as animated birthday cakes and puppy dogs that show up on the recipient's profile page as a playful way to interact and bring a smile to a friend's day.

Recently, locket manufacturer Heartsmith took the trend one step further, debuting a new Facebook application that allows Facebook users to create and send virtual lockets to their friends, and then convert the lockets into actual purchases on the Heartsmith Web site.

The application is free to use, and the company says the program allows users "to enjoy the experience of sending someone a locket without ever leaving Facebook or spending a dime."

Whether or not users choose to purchase actual lockets later, the application exposes a new audience of consumers to the brand, allowing them to interact and learn about Heartsmith in a fun way.

First, Facebook users click on the application link at the bottom left corner of any Facebook page and then search for Heartsmith. The application will download instantly, and users will be asked to choose a locket style, selecting from a variety of shapes: heart, oval or round, and metals: yellow gold, white gold or silver. Modeled after real products, the options are many, from classic heart-shaped charms to antiqued silver looks featuring engraved scrolls.

After choosing a locket style, users are prompted to upload a photo (maximum size of 500 kilobits) to insert into the locket. Users then select recipients from their list of Facebook friends, and the virtual locket will be sent off to them.

If a user wants to convert the virtual locket into an actual one, he or she will have the opportunity to do so through Heartsmith's Web site, Heartsmith.com, where lockets range in price for about $30 for a sterling silver number to upwards of $3,000 for platinum and diamond versions. The company also offers free engraving or free upgrades to FedEx two-day shipping for Facebooks users as well.

The application, currently in beta test mode, officially launches to the public tomorrow.
