Masons Studio Jewellers has won National Jeweler's Best Of" platinum jewelry contest for this platinum and 18-karat gold ring feature a 0.5-carat diamond.

New York--Masons Studio Jewellers has been named the winner of National Jeweler's "Best Of" contest for platinum jewelry.

The designing jewelers, based in Tasmania, Australia, won for their "Ark in Troubled Waters" ring featuring an 18-karat yellow gold vessel set with a 0.5-carat marquise-cut diamond riding above the waves of a platinum storm.

The one-of-a-kind piece "is an abstract representation of a vessel buoyed up in a sea of troubles," the designers said, with the "ark" employing the traditional noble metal of gold and all of its associations of incorruptibility, while also containing the pure white light of the diamond. As for the platinum, the designers said the metal yielded crisp results in the modeling of the waves, and that the weight lends gravitas to the piece.

A panel of National Jeweler judges, including the Jewelry Information Center's Amanda Gizzi, and editors Victoria Gomelsky and Lorraine DePasque, selected three additional finalists in the contest: Laura M. Jewelry, Noam Carver and Zoltan David.

While each company highlighted its own unique style in its entry pieces, one common thread was the bevy of ring designs.

Laura M. Jewelry was selected for its platinum round-wire right-hand ring featuring 314 round-brilliant-cut colorless diamonds surrounding a 9.4-carat old-rose-cut black diamond.

The designer said the company's design philosophy is to incorporate multiple elements to create a light, ethereal, "dazzling" piece that is as scintillating as possible to the human eye.

Given that ethos, the designer juxtaposed the black diamond with fine-cut, high-quality colorless diamonds, giving the stones a striking contrast.

Noam Carver's entry, a custom engagement ring featuring a 1.6-carat round-brilliant-cut diamond surrounded by 35 stones and set in platinum, also won the designer a place among the finalists.

The designer said he drew inspiration for the custom ring from the organic forms that exist in nature as well as in classical elements in architecture.

Finally, Zoltan David also earned a finalists' nod for the company's cognac diamond eternity band in platinum and accented with a 24-karat gold inlay. The band features 23 matched princess-cut natural-color diamonds, making for a total carat weight of 3.66.

Online voters who cast their picks in the "People's Choice" category had many of the same favorites as the judges.

Voters selected Laura M. Jewelry as the category's winner, with Masons Studio Jewellers and Noam Carver coming in as runners-up.
