Hans D. Krieger's sword-shaped platinum pendant with white diamonds on a platinum chain won in the "Platinum Jewelry for Men" category of the first annual Platinum Design Awards at BaselWorld.

New York--Platinum Guild International (PGI) has chosen three manufacturers as winners in the first annual Platinum Design Awards from this year's BaselWorld watch and jewelry show.

An international panel of judges chose Italian manufacturer Picchiotti as the winner in the "Platinum Bridal Jewelry" category for the brand's solitaire engagement ring featuring brown, yellow and white diamonds.

Japanese manufacturer Kuwayama snagged the award for best "Platinum Design in the Nature-Inspired" category for its platinum spider webs crafted into a necklace, bracelet and earrings.

And in the competition's third and final category, "Platinum Jewelry for Men," German manufacturer Hans D. Krieger was awarded for its sword-shaped platinum pendant with white diamonds on a platinum chain.

"PGI designed this contest to provide visibility and awareness for well-designed, outstanding platinum pieces," PGI Chief Executive Officer James Courage said in a media release. "We have been delighted with the creativity and quality of the winning pieces and, indeed, all the pieces entered into our Platinum Design Award categories at Basel in this, our first year."

Judges for the contest included visiting journalists from Italy-based Vogue Gioielli and Trends Jewellery Forecast, Hong Kong-based China Daily News and Jewellery News Asia, France-based Orion Magazine, Dreams Magazine and Le Bijoutier International, Japan-based Women's Wear Daily and Germany-based Schmuck Magazine and GZ/World One.
