MJTS announces 2010 jewelry design competition

October 14, 2009

Madison, Wis.--The Midwest Jewelers Trade Show (MJTS) is now inviting professional Midwestern jewelers--both retailers and jewelers who work for manufacturers--to participate in its 2010 Professional Jewelry Design Competition.

Winning entries from the competition will be displayed during the MJTS, taking place from March 5-7, 2010, at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison, Wis.

The competition is open to jewelers from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Categories for the competition include: rings up to $1,000, rings $1,000-$2,000, rings $2,000-$4,000, rings $4,000 and up, pendants up to $1,000, pendants $1,000-$2,000, pendants $2,000-$4,000, pendants $4,000 and up, earrings, bracelets, handmade chains, brooches, enhancers and other miscellaneous jewelry accessories, and objects of art; i.e., liturgical art, chalices, boxes, hollow ware, vessels, etc.

Participants can enter a maximum of two entries (in two separate categories), and the designs must be original and produced within 12 months of the contest. Pieces cannot have been mass-produced or previously sold. Only precious metals (silver, platinum, gold and titanium) may be used as the primary metal, and all stones must be genuine.

Entries will be judged based upon quality, craftsmanship, degree of difficulty, design, originality, wear-ability and attention to detail.

Judges will select a "Best of Show" piece, as well as first- and second-place winners in each category. Meanwhile, MJTS attendees will cast their own votes for a "Jeweler's Choice Award" winner.

Each designer entering the competition must submit a one-time $25 handling fee per entry. Entries must be received by Feb. 15, 2010.

A student competition will take place concurrently, with those eligible including full-time students enrolled in a jewelry or related program at a secondary institution from one of the Midwestern states listed above.

Designs entered must be under the supervision of an instructor and can be in any metal of the student's choosing. Synthetic stones are allowed.

Each design must have a maximum cost of $500, and students can enter one design into one or all categories of the competition: rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants and necklaces, handmade chains, brooches, enhancers and other miscellaneous jewelry accessories, and objects of art.

As with the professional competition, judges will choose a Best of Show piece, as well as first- and second-place winners in each category, and MJTS attendees will select a Jeweler's Choice Award winner.
