IIJS show set for August in Mumbai

June 22, 2009

Mumbai, India--The Indian International Jewellery Show (IIJS), organized by The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), is slated for Aug. 6-10 at the NSE grounds in Goregaon, Mumbai.

The long-running show is designed to provide its exhibitors with a niche platform to showcase their unique creations, while also offering networking, trading and a business platform for all attendees.

Despite the economic slowdown, the level of participation at IIJS this year has been "superlative" and is expected to grow further, according to a press release from show organizers.

"Even though the recession undoubtedly impaired the growth of this industry for a while, now the market is witnessing a positive change," GJEPC Chairman Vasant Mehta said in the release. "Hopefully, with the expected boost that [the] trade will receive after IIJS, the gem and jewelry industry will observe a remarkable improvement and establish its former glory."

With 1.5 million workers, India is the world's largest manufacturing center for gems and jewelry, and the industry contributes more than 12 percent to the country's total export earnings.

The show brings in an average of 18,000 visitors, including domestic and international registrants, and organizers hope this year's anticipated strong showing will indicate a turnaround in the market.

IIJS 2009 spreads across an area of 46,000 square meters and includes 1,554 stalls in the jewelry, loose gemstones, machinery and allied categories, as well as merchandise in national pavilions representing manufacturers from Belgium, Israel, Italy, Thailand, Turkey and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, among others.

Various delegations from around the globe have signed on to be a part of the event.
