Bangkok fair lures buyers through travel discounts
January 05, 2009
Bangkok, Thailand--The Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair (BGJF) is offering hotel room discounts to attract and assist buyers who will be attending the upcoming edition of the show, set to take place from Feb. 25-March 1.
The show's parent organization, the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA), said in a message to its members that it would pay for half of the hotel room rates of buyers invited by TGJTA members.
Earlier this fall, the U.S. Embassy issued travel warnings to its citizens after violent clashes between government supporters and opponents took place in the Thai capital. In November, Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport was closed due to occupation by anti-government protestors. After a resolution, commercial flights in and out of the airport resumed in early December.
"The Chinese character for 'crisis' comprises two words: 'danger' and 'opportunity,' BGJF Chief Executive Officer Somchai Phornchindarak said in a media release. "Savvy, creative jewelers and gem dealers who choose to look at the half full glass, understand this and know that every apparent crisis also offers new business opportunities. With this in mind, the BGJF took the step to assist buyers to attend the fair and take advantage of the growing Thai market."
Buyers participating in the promotion must agree to reserve their rooms in one of the hotels listed on the BGJF Web site and must agree to the room rates published there. The maximum room rate amount to be reimbursed is about $85 per day (or 3,000 baht). The program is valid for reservations made between Feb. 24-March 2, and the offer is available only for reservations made by Jan. 20.
