AWCI watch-service training
The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) is hosting a number of programs at the show to answer all of your watch and clock service needs. These include:
--Meet with the AWCI's sponsors. --View a series of short demonstrations on how to properly perform watch-battery replacement, waterproof testing, watch timing and bracelet sizing. --Meet with Michael Klafiger of Greiner Vibrograf in Switzerland; Paul and Gary Borel of Jules Borel; Pat Cassedy of CasKer; Henry Kessler of Kessler/Renata; Christy Cauble of Leica Microsystems; Jack Kurdzionak of Excells/The Watchmaker; AWCI's Executive Director Jim Lubic and others. --Pick up lists of recommended equipment and shop layouts. --Inspect the latest tools from Horotec and Bergeon. --Learn how to operate the latest watch-repair equipment from Greiner and Witschi. --Examine Borel's top-quality German workbench and Waldmann bench lighting. --Check out the ergonomically adjustable chairs by Herman Miller, the cleaning equipment by GemOro and more.
The AWCI will be located in Booth No. 32065 in the Hall of Time.
Gem-A Gemmology Intro Day
The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) will host a one-day "Introduction to Practical Gemmology" workshop on June 3.
Participants will learn about the basic principles of gem identification and try gem-testing for themselves, under the guidance of Gem-A's senior instructor Doug Garrod FGA DGA.
No previous experience is required and all materials and instruments will be provided on the day.
The workshop will be hosted at the American Gem Society (AGS) headquarters in Las Vegas from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

GIA "Mini" Jewelry Career Fair
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will host a "Mini" Jewelry Career Fair on May 31.
The Mini Jewelry Career Fair is a condensed version of the institute's popular career coaching and job search advice event. It will begin with a short "state of the industry" address by GIA President and Chief Executive Officer Donna Baker. She will then moderate the "Job Success in Today's Market" panel, which includes John Green, president and CEO of Lux Bond and Green; Matthew Green, sales director of Europe, Middle East and Asia for John Hardy International Ltd.; Joel Schechter, CEO of Honora; and Phyllis Bergman, CEO of Mercury Ring Corp.
The career coaches, all notable industry leaders, will provide one-on-one sessions with attendees, offering tips for success in specialized categories including: design, career information, networking, resume review and business start-up and entrepreneurship. Each private session will last 15 minutes.
Although no on-site recruiting will be available, the GIA will provide information on current career opportunities in the gem and jewelry industry.
The event will take place at the Venetian Conference Center in the Zeno Room 4702. The doors will open at 9:30 a.m. for career coaching sign-ups. The opening session will be held from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., followed by coaching sessions through 1:15 p.m. The event is free and open to all with no advance registration or show badge required. JVC, JBT "Basics of Memo Transactions" seminar
The Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC) and The Jewelers Board of Trade (JBT) will present "The Basics of Memo Transactions--The Dos and Don'ts of Trading on Memo" on May 29.
Attendees will receive a copy of "The Essential Guide to 'Memo' Transactions," which gives jewelry firms a step-by-step method to best position their businesses in cases of economic reversals.
The guide includes many important topics such as consignment agreements and protecting your business in an event of bankruptcy, as well as frequently asked questions and a glossary of terms.
The seminar will be held in the San Polo Ballroom, 3401, Level 3, in the Venetian Hotel, from 12:30 p.m.-1:45 p.m. The seminar is free to all JCK show badge holders and no prior registration is required.

MJSA "At the Bench" seminars
Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America (MJSA) will present six "At the Bench Live" seminars during the show, and each day of the show will feature a session focusing on custom design and bench work.
On May 30, Mark Maxwell will show how to design in CAD with a personal, handcrafted touch by applying classic goldsmithing techniques to milled wax models. Maxwell, a Jewelers of America (JA)-certified master bench jeweler and owner of Mark Maxwell Designer/Goldsmith, also will teach a hands-on, step-by-step seminar on May 31 where he will show participants how to create accurate hand renderings that can help boost their custom design business.
On June 1, Kate Wolf will host a session on using wax techniques to create perfectly matching shadow bands. Wolf, a master of the art of wax carving, hosts workshops at Wolf Designs and owns Wolf Tools.
Rounding out the program will be Chris Ploof, owner of Chris Ploof Studio, and Brad Simon, an award-winning designer and JA-certified master bench jeweler. Ploof will help participants gain a competitive edge by showing them how to quickly, efficiently and creatively create custom rings (May 30). Simon will demonstrate a unique method for high quality, speedy pave setting (May 31) and methods for setting princess cuts without fear of chipping (June 1).
Rapaport Breakfast and Fair Trade Jewelry Conference
The annual Rapaport Breakfast and Fair Trade Jewelry Conference will be held on June 1.
Rapaport Group Chairman Martin Rapaport will present his keynote "State of the Diamond Industry" address at the breakfast. His talk will focus on how members of the jewelry trade can prosper in spite of the global economic crisis.
The annual Rapaport Fair Trade Jewelry Conference presents an opportunity for members of the jewelry trade, development nongovernmental organizations and government agencies to participate in open discussions and learn how they can participate in the development of Fair Trade Jewelry. Fair Trade Jewelry offers an unprecedented opportunity for the jewelry industry to play a vital role in the sustainable economic development of impoverished and disadvantaged sectors of the jewelry trade.

RJC panel discussions
Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) Vice Chairman John Hall and Chief Operations Officer Catherine Sproule will outline the council's latest work on its RJC Certification System during three panels.
On May 29, Hall will be an audience participant on Jewelers of America's panel "Adapting and Evolving Your Business in a Changing World: A Discussion of Trends, Opportunities, Challenges and Solutions." He will outline how responsible business practices remain a priority for many successful retailers in spite of the economic situation. He also will be available after the session to meet with journalists.
Also on May 29, Sproule will join the panel called "The Burma Bill, Irradiated Stones, Cultured Pearls: How to be Compliant." Both Sproule and Hall will be available for interviews after the panel presentation.
On June 1, Hall will speak at the Rapaport Fair Trade Conference, where he will discuss the RJC's supply chain transparency model and how it concretely addresses consumer confidence issues in the diamond and gold supply chain. He will outline the demonstrated model of independent third-party monitoring of its members' operations.
