LVMH-owned eLuxury shuttering retail operations

San Francisco--Web site eLuxury, a destination for high-end designer closeout apparel, shoes and accessories that's owned by Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton LVMH, has closed down its retail operations and plans to convert to an "editorial destination" for information on the luxury market.

According to a press release, eLuxury ceased retail operations on June 26 and is "now moving to the next step of its evolution, a process which will reposition it as a premier source of editorial content, information and inspiration for luxury customers around the world."

The exact reason for the site's shutdown was unclear at press time, and calls and e-mails to a representative for eLuxury went unreturned.

The site now features a "question of the day"--such as "New Wave or New Age?"--and those that answer are encouraged to link to eLuxury on Twitter. The site also offers users the chance to sign up to receive e-mails as an eLuxury "insider" and to add eLuxury on Facebook.

Additional content, imagery and video will be added over time, the site states, while the editorial portion of eLuxury is slated to debut in early 2010.

According to the release, eLuxury was a pioneer in luxury e-commerce, serving as a launching pad for some of the world's most well-known, high-end brands. Launched in June 2000, eLuxury carried products by brands such as Dior, Dolce and Gabbana, Fendi, Maison Martin Margiela, Marc Jacobs and Versace.

The site frequently made Internet Retailer's Top 500 Guide, which ranks the U.S.'s largest retail Web sites by annual sales.
