Bentonville, Ark.--Net sales at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. increased 2.8 percent to $30.02 billion for the four weeks ended Feb. 27, compared with $29.19 billion for the four weeks ended Feb. 29, 2008, the company announced recently.

Meanwhile, net sales at Walmart U.S. increased 8.1 percent to $20.07 billion for the period, compared with $18.56 billion for the four weeks ended Feb. 29, 2008, and same-store sales at both Walmart U.S. and Sam's Club (without fuel) increased 5.1 percent.

According to the company, Walmart U.S. had a strong sales performance during the four-week February period, with same-store sales driven largely by an acceleration of traffic. Average ticket also increased.

"Our customers have come to trust our 'Save Money Live Better' promise, and we exceeded our own expectations for the period," Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Vice Chairman Eduardo Castro-Wright said in a media release. "We believe falling gas prices significantly boosted household disposable income in February and therefore allowed for both more trips and more spending toward discretionary categories."

Grocery, health and wellness, and entertainment were the top-performing categories for the period. Home and hardlines also were positive.
