Reports: J.C. Penney stung by jewelry heists

Covington, La.--Two men made off with $1.5 million worth of jewelry and other merchandise from a Louisiana J.C. Penney store earlier this week, the latest in a string of Mission: Impossible-like robberies at the department store chain.

According to The Associated Press, two men cut a hole in the roof of a J.C. Penney store near Covington, La., on Sunday night and descended into the store using ropes.

The suspects then were able to disable the security system, allowing them to raid the store, stuffing garbage bags with $1.5 million in jewelry, clothing and other goods, according to the AP.

Security captured their moves throughout the store.

Three days later, a similar heist took place at the J.C. Penney store on Louisiana Avenue in Lafayette, La., according to The Daily Advertiser, a newspaper in Lafayette.

A J.C. Penney spokesperson confirmed to the Advertiser that he believes these two Louisiana burglaries are the latest in a string of heists at J.C. Penney stores across the country.

In June, a similar burglary took place at a J.C. Penney store in Indianapolis, and stores in Pasadena, Texas, and Roseburg, Texas, were hit in July.

"We've taken a pretty big hit," the spokesman told the Advertiser. "We're working to recover what we can."
