Jewelry.com, Macy's collection toasts NYC icons

September 03, 2009
This "Central Park" necklace, one of 12 iconic pieces in Jewelry.com and Macy's "Manhattan" collection, features 890 diamonds and gemstones weighing nearly 67 carats, set in white gold.

New York--Just in time for the upcoming Fashion Night Out in Manhattan on Sept. 10, Jewelry.com and Macy's are releasing a 50-piece "Manhattan" collection inspired by New York City icons ranging from the swirling rotunda of the Guggenheim Museum to the kaleidoscopic color of Times Square to the urban grid of city fire escapes.

The "Manhattan" collection was created to celebrate the beauty and spirit of 12 of Manhattan's best-loved monuments and themes, translating them into bejeweled works of art that include a "Museum Collection" and a "Couture Collection," Jewelry.com said in a release issued on Wednesday. The 12 iconic pieces in the Couture Collection each took between 12-18 months to create, with each diamond and gem individually sourced and set, ensuring high quality, the release said.

Icons featured in the collection include the Brooklyn Bridge, Macy's Herald Square, the Guggenheim Museum, Grand Central Terminal, the Chrysler Building, Wall Street, Times Square, Lincoln Center, Central Park, St. Patrick's Cathedral, the city's iconic fire escapes and various "New York moments," including yellow cabs, the Statue of Liberty, the Big Apple and the Macy's Star.

The collection will be unveiled on the main floor in the fine-jewelry department in Macy's flagship store at Herald Square during Fashion Night Out, a city-wide event that kicks off day one of New York's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (Sept. 10-17), and will include numerous other events by jewelers and other retailers around the city.

One Couture piece, "Brooklyn Bridge," is a diamond bangle featuring more than 670 diamonds, with each stone meticulously set in an intricate design that forms an "architectural waltz," the release said. A necklace in the collection, inspired by the lights and colors of Time Square, contains 348 precious gemstones, with each stone sourced and set to reflect the beauty and hues of its neighboring jewel. The dazzling rotunda of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum yielded an exquisite set of diamond earrings. Also included in the collection are gold charms based on "New York moments."

The collection's inspiration is a classic New York story. Back in February 2006, executives from Jewelry.com and Macy's met at the city's iconic Carlyle Cafe, where Woody Allen and his band were playing.

Several months later, Jewelry.com Chief Executive Officer Ofer Azrielant assembled the creative team that was charged with capturing the beauty, creativity and achievements that define Manhattan. Sagi Haviv, a renowned trademark designer, redesigned the Manhattan logo to subliminally reflect the city's iconic skyline, and Evert DeGraeve, a prolific jewelry creator, was brought in as creative director to oversee the project. DeGraeve gathered a group of diverse jewelry designers--including Maria Canale, Lili Chu, Chris Correia, Lawrence Lo and Francis Mertens--to partner with him in creating the 12 iconic pieces.
