Akron, Ohio--The Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian Ad Litem (CASA/GAL) program has honored Sterling executive Bill Montalto with the 2009 William P. Kannel Child Advocate of the Year Award.

The presentation took place on Oct. 10 at a benefit to raise money to help abused and neglected children in Summit County, a region of Ohio that encompasses Sterling's Akron headquarters.

A former CASA/GAL chairman and current chief operating officer of Sterling, Montalto joined the Summit County CASA/GAL Board in 2002, and served as board chairman in 2006 and 2007, leading the program in its mission to provide every child who enters the court system as a result of allegations of abuse, neglect or dependency with a trained volunteer to advocate in court for the child's best interest.

Sterling Jewelers sponsored the Oct. 10 celebration, and featured speakers for the evening included Sterling's George Murray, CASA chair; and Juvenile Court Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio, among others.

Judge Teodosio introduced Montalto at the event, saying "I'll begin by stating the obvious: The Summit County CASA/GAL program is one of the finest of its kind in the state of Ohio. What isn't quite as obvious are the three major reasons for the program's continued positive impact on our community's young people. Those reasons are: its outstanding volunteers, its tremendous staff members and its singular leadership. Tonight, we honor one of those leaders with the Judge William P. Kannel Child Advocate of the Year Award."

Accepting his award, Montalto recognized the many volunteers who have participated in the CASA program.

"Your donations of time, expertise, compassion and money are critical to CASA's mission of providing the advocates to the young people who need them," Montalto said.

William P. Kanel, judge of the Summit County Juvenille Court, founded the CASA/GAL program in 1981. The program continues to today under the leadership of Judge Teodosio.
