Report: Holiday online spending continues to surge

Reston, Va.—From Nov. 1 to Dec. 12, consumers spent $17.56 billion online, a 24 percent increase over the same period last year, according to ComScore Networks.

On Monday, Dec. 11, online spending reached a record-breaking single-day total of $661 million, marking a 19 percent increase over the corresponding Monday in 2005.

"With growth rates for the beginning of this week slightly below expectations, it's possible that we could see a greater share of spending shift to later in the week and even into next week, since many online retailers are promising pre-Christmas deliveries for even later purchases this season," ComScore Networks Chairman Gian Fulgoni said in a statement. "Because shipping was so reliable last year, it's conceivable that more consumers are opting to procrastinate this year."

ComScore Networks predicts total online spending on non-travel purchases this holiday season (November to December) will increase 24 percent to $24.3 billion. From January to October this year, online spending on non-travel purchases increased 24 percent to $77.5 billion.
