Study: Online watch, jewelry sales up 22 percent for Valentine's Day

Reston, Va.—Online watch and jewelry sales increased 22 percent in the week prior to Valentine's Day (ended Feb. 11) to $24.7 million, when compared to the four preceding weeks, according to ComScore Networks.

"In recent years, consumers have increasingly turned to the Web for Valentine's Day gifts," ComScore Senior Analyst Andrew Lipsman said in a statement. "Flowers, which are always a sentimental favorite, have experienced the most noticeable spikes in online sales."

Sales in the flowers and greeting-cards categories increased 98 percent to $24.5 million for the week. In January, more than 29 million Americans (about one in six Internet users) visited Web sites in the flowers, gifts and greeting-cards categories. The leading sites were American Greetings Property (8.1 million visitors), Hallmark (5.6 million visitors) and RedEnvelope.com (1.9 million visitors).
