Study: July same-store sales edge up

Columbus, Ohio—Same-store sales increased 2.9 percent in July compared with June sales, but remained down from the same period the prior year for more than 50 retailers reporting monthly results, TNS Retail Forward reports.

July's sales results are up from a 2.3 percent sales-weighted composite reported last month and down from the 4 percent composite reported in July 2006.

Warehouse clubs, drug stores and department stores posted stronger than average sales results in July. Lagging behind were apparel and accessory stores, discount department stores and dollar stores.

Although gasoline prices did not begin to ease until August, shoppers reported that they were having less of an impact on their spending. The percentage of shoppers that said they were spending less as a result of high gas prices declined to 55 percent in July compared with 64 percent a year ago. Conversely, the percentage that said their spending had not changed because of gasoline prices increased to 45 percent in July compared with 36 percent a year ago.

"Shoppers might feel some relief from high gasoline prices, but it's unlikely to generate much of a bounce in back-to-school spending and beyond," Retail Forward Knowledge Base Director Frank Badillo said in a statement. "The looming credit crunch is among the forces likely to dampen spending going forward."
