Shop.org to lobby Congress on behalf of Web retailers

Washington—Shop.org, an association for online retailers, is broadening its mission to include advocacy and public policy.

Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, said in a statement issued on Wednesday that the online retail industry needs a strong voice in the policy arena to match its growing economic force.

"Conversations about online retailers are happening on Capitol Hill, and it is time that Shop.org became a part of them," Silverman said.

Initially, Shop.org will expand on the current and previous lobbying efforts of its parent, the National Retail Federation (NRF), and will address issues such as spyware and "card not present" interchange fees. Shop.org will also tackle click fraud, patent trolling and net neutrality issues as well as continue its work with NRF's Association for Retail Technology to help create standards and guidelines for the industry to follow.

Tracy Mullin, president and chief executive officer of the NRF and a Shop.org board of directors member, said although the online community shares issues with brick-and-mortar retailers, the community also faces specialized issues that do no affect physical stores.

"By focusing on the specific needs of online retailers, Shop.org will be able to expand upon the work that NRF has already accomplished in this area," Mullin said.

Shop.org will also form a Policy Advisory Group, which will identify potential issues for online retailers and provide help in advocacy efforts. The group will be comprised of online retail executives.
