Georgia jewelry stores close amid robberies

Atlanta—A series of smash-and-grab robberies in one Atlanta-area mall has jewelry storeowners shuttering their doors, an Atlanta TV news station reports.

According to a story posted on 11Alive.com, eight retail jewelers at Northlake Mall in DeKalb County kept their doors locked on Sunday, mostly to show solidarity with those that have been recently targeted by thieves.

Some stores posted signs warning of lax security and the recent spree of smash-and-grab robberies that have plagued jewelry stores in this suburban mall.

Jewelry storeowners told 11 Alive that mall management later ordered them to take down the fliers or risk being arrested.

"We want shoppers to know it's unsafe. We're scared to open our doors," Amin Lalani, owner of several stores, including Charms of Gold, told 11 Alive.

According to 11 Alive, there have been three smash-and-grab robberies at the mall within a month, the latest occurring around 8 p.m. on Saturday.

An off-duty police officer caught one of the suspects in that robbery and police are now working to determine if the suspect was involved in any other incidents.

Surveillance video shows that during the robberies, a group of men approached display cases with a hammer, broke the glass and stole thousands of dollars worth of gold and diamonds.

11 Alive reports that calls placed to Simon Property Group, which owns the mall, were not returned.

While the mall has private security, 11 Alive reports that it also has asked for help from the DeKalb County Police Department, which told 11 Alive it has stepped up patrols in the area.

Meanwhile, the owners of the eight jewelry stores said they would remain closed until security improves.
