Study: June same-store sale slip

Columbus, Ohio—Same-store sales slipped 2.3 percent in June compared with May sales for more than 50 retailers reporting monthly results today, TNS Retail Forward reports.

June's sales results are down from a 2.7 percent sales-weighted composite reported last month, and down from the 3.2 percent composite reported in June 2006.

"There is good and bad in the retail numbers, just like the overall economy," Retail Forward Knowledge Base Director Frank Badillo said in a statement. "There's still some good news in the job market and that's helping offset the bad news at the gas pump and in the housing market."

Warehouse clubs and drug stores posted stronger than average sales results in June. Lagging behind were apparel and accessory stores, department stores, discount department stores and dollar stores.

Nearly all venues experienced a decline in the percentage of shoppers visiting them monthly from July 2006 to June 2007, perhaps due to higher fuel prices. Last year, the decline was due to a jump in shoppers using the Internet to purchase apparel-related goods. This year, that percentage has remained stable.
