Louisiana retailer wins 'INDesign' award

Lafayette, La.—Kiki, the Lafayette, La.-based retail jewelry and accessories store, has been awarded with the 2007 INDesign Awards gold medal for a commercial interior design project.

The Independent Weekly, a regional Louisiana publication, sponsors the INDesign Awards. The annual competition honors innovative commercial and residential architecture, historical preservation projects and interior design in Acadiana, the state's southern region.

Kiki, located at The Market at River Ranch shopping center, was completed in 2006, and was designed by Jean-Philippe Meunier, co-owner of the Miami-based firm NK newlook, which designs high-end furniture and interiors for luxury brands such as Cartier and Chanel.

The shop, owned by Kiki Frayard, features sophisticated, clean lines, plenty of clear light and a curving back wall and round jewelry island that encourage customers to linger.

Interior features include polished Travertine marble and Ipe wood floors, a cool, stainless steel baseboard and checkout countertop, and dark wood furniture, all designed by Meunier as well. A candy-pink color runs throughout the store, adding a particular punch to the homey wood tones.

As for lighting, natural sunlight pours through the tall windows at the front of the store creating an airy atmosphere, small directional lights are recessed into the ceiling and white lights reflect stone and metal and make the jewelry sparkle.

The INDesign Awards Luncheon, featuring a lecture on smart growth, will take place on May 24. Tickets are $30 per person; $255 for tables of eight or more. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Drue Kennerson at (337) 988-4607 ext. 118 or send an e-mail to druek@theind.com.
