Twin department stores make some malls see double

Due to the merger of Macy’s parent company and May Department Stores, Fair Oaks Mall in Virginia has become one of 85 malls across the country to have two Macy’s stores under its roof, The Washington Post reported.

After the merger, some of the May Department Stores formerly known as Hecht’s were closed while others, like the one in Fair Oaks Mall, were remodeled and renamed. Macy’s spokesman Jim Sluzewski explained it is not a new practice for the company, which has operated duplicate locations in a single mall for decades because of previous acquisitions.

A desire not to hand over coveted anchor locations to its competitors, possible restrictions in its agreement with the mall and the option of showcasing more of its products in the same market are reasons why the company may not want to sell or lease one of its duplicate spaces. Not to mention, Fair Oaks general manager Chris Poleto said both locations in his mall are performing well.
