MJSA changes stance on Indian trade agreements

Providence, R.I.—The Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America (MJSA) has announced its support of renewing trade agreements that allow India to import jewelry without paying tariffs while requiring U.S. manufacturers to pay duties to export goods to India.

MJSA sent a letter to members of Congress in support of the renewal with the stipulation that India reduces its reciprocal tariffs within the next two years.

The move symbolizes that MJSA has softened its stance on Indian trade agreements, after urging its members in September to contact trade representatives and Congress to demand an end to what it called an "unfair trade advantage" given to India and other countries.

But Chuck Lein, president and chief operating officer of Stuller, says Congress should equalize the tariffs as soon as possible.

"I am not advocating a trade war," he says. "But I am advocating a level playing field. It makes no sense at all that countries such as China and India can export their jewelry to America and not pay any taxes on them, while Americans have to pay high tariffs to export to their countries."

Representatives from the Indian Diamond Colored Stone Association were not immediately available to comment on this report.
