Target's future stores will be bigger, greener

Target Corp. is testing a new general-merchandise concept with the opening of two store prototypes—referred to as P2009 and S2009—in Minneapolis, reported the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

The retailer plans to roll out the 2009 prototypes at more than 100 locations nationwide next year, starting in March.

In addition to being "green"-certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the new Target stores will include additional space for pre-prepared food items and an expanded electronics department.

The new stores will be at least 6,000 square feet larger than current locations, and new SuperTarget stores will gain an additional 12,000 square feet, growing close to the size a Wal-Mart Supercenter.
