Washington, D.C.—While it remains to be seen how brick-and-mortar retailers will fare this holiday season, one thing is certain: People are not shying away from shopping online.

Cybermonday.com, a Web site linking shoppers with online deals the Monday following Thanksgiving, reported that site traffic increased threefold compared with last year.

The site, which offers deals from more than 550 online retailers, had more than 1 million visitors by 1 p.m. EST yesterday.

Cyber Monday, a term coined by Shop.org in 2005, refers to the high number of people shopping online the Monday following Thanksgiving. This activity has prompted many retailers to extend their Black Friday weekend deals into Monday.

The increased traffic on Cybermonday.com is in line with the general trend of increased online shopping this holiday season.

Online tracking company ComScore Inc. reported that online consumer spending is up 17 percent over last year for the first 23 days of the November-December 2007 holiday season.

According to ComScore, consumers have spent more than $9.3 billion online during the season to date. Spending this year increased on both Thanksgiving Day, when shoppers spent $272 million, 29 percent more than last year, and on Black Friday, up 22 percent to $531 million.

Online tracking company Hitwise reported similar figures, showing that online traffic on Thanksgiving in particular was up 20 percent from 2006, making turkey day the hottest day for online holiday shopping so far.

According to Hitwise, the most popular sites visited on Thanksgiving were Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Amazon and Target.

Wal-Mart also was the most visited site on Black Friday, followed by Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Circuit City.

As to what people are actually buying while they're surfing the virtual marketplace, ComScore's research shows the sale of video games, consoles and video game accessories increased the most between 2006 and 2007, with sales in that category up 134 percent.

Other gainers included furniture, appliances and equipment (up 36 percent); consumer electronics (up 21 percent); sports and fitness (up 20 percent); and apparel and accessories (17 percent).
