JSA issues traveling salesperson alert for N.C.

April 18, 2007

New York—Prompted by several recent attacks on jewelry salespeople that happened in Charlotte, N.C., the Jewelers' Security Alliance (JSA) has issued a warning for the area.

The most recent incident in Charlotte occurred on April 11, when a traveling salesman for a watch company made a call on retailers in the South Park Mall. After returning to his car in the parking deck at 5:30 p.m., he found it would not start.

A suspect standing nearby reached into the rear seat of the salesman's car and grabbed a briefcase.

When the salesman gave chase, a second suspect threatened him with a knife.

Both suspects then ran to a minivan driven by a third man. The salesman chased them and hurt his arm trying to grab the minivan door. All three suspects were described as Hispanic men, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds.

The JSA says salespeople shouldn't let down their guards, even in smaller cities and towns.

"Due to many arrests, convictions and long sentences of South American gang members over the last few years in traditionally dangerous areas, the gangs are traveling to places that had not recently experienced significant activity against traveling salespersons such as Denver, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Charlotte, N.C.," the JSA said in a recent e-mail alert. "There is no place in the country where a traveling jewelry salesperson can relax his guard!"

A similar incident in which a gang robbed a salesman of his jewelry line while he was going into his trunk occurred on March 10, also in Charlotte.

There were also eight other attacks during 2006 on salespersons in North Carolina, the JSA reports.
