Report: Same-store sales up in September

Columbus, Ohio—Same-store sales increased 4 percent in September for 60 retailers who reported monthly results on Thursday, according to consulting firm Retail Forward.

Apparel and accessories stores, department stores and drug stores represented growth leaders. The least growth came from discount department stores, warehouse clubs and dollar stores, Retail Forward reports.

September sales showed a slight increase from the 3.9 percent weighted sales composite seen in August 2006, and a slight decrease from the 4.1 percent composite reported in September 2005.

Retail Forward also recently released its holiday sales forecast, which expects sales to mature at a more moderate pace for the rest of the year. The company predicts 5.5 percent year-over-year growth in the fourth quarter. Such sales would fall below the 7.2 percent gain seen last holiday season and slightly below the average holiday growth rate since 1995, according to Retail Forward.
