Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair still on

Bangkok, Thailand--It's business as usual for the upcoming Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair (BGJF), despite continuing unrest in the Thai capital.

A court ousted Thailand Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat from office this week, spurring anti-government protesters to end their occupation of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports.

While the latest developments have essentially pulled the nation from the brink of chaos, the reshuffling means that unrest is set to continue.

Organizers of the show said in a media release that they are working hard to protect the safety of all visitors as well as inform them about the situation.

BGJF Chief Executive Officer Somchai Phornchindarak has urged those with plans to travel to the BGJF, set for Feb. 25-March 1, to go forward with their trips.

"We understand that the situation is now resolved long before the opening of the 43rd BGJF, and we will continue to monitor the situation very closely," Phornchindarak said in a media release.

Commercial flights will resume at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, and the transportation authority has said all systems will be checked before the airport resumes full operations. In addition, organizers guarantee that the show venue, the Impact Exhibition and Convention Centre's Challenger Hall, will be secure for exhibitors and visitors.

For more information about the fair, visit the BGJF Web site, BangkokGemsFair.com, or e-mail info@bangkokgemsfair.com.
