Las Vegas—Major retailers seeking a stronger connection to India's diamond and jewelry industry have been invited to attend the "Best-of-the-Best" Jewelry Business Conference in Mumbai, India, from Oct. 1-5.

The show is being modeled after the Nielsen Fine Jewelry CEO Summit and is being organized by R and B Partners and the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). A presentation on the trip was held on Sunday morning at the JCK Las Vegas show.

Bakul Mehta, representing the diamond panel for the GJEPC, said the goal of the event is to connect large U.S.-based retailers with Indian vendors.

"The conference is to help the U.S. retailers understand the vendors in India better. It will create an environment so [they] understand what India is capable of providing," Mehta said.

The event will also give Indian jewelry vendors insight into the needs of U.S. retailers.

By fostering better relationships between both sides, the conference will also help to improve profit structures, margins and credit, Mehta said.

"We have common challenges and we need to address them together," Mehta said.

Rick Bannerot, principal of R and B Partners, said retailers on the National Jeweler Supersellers list have been invited to participate. More specifically, he said both the "executive suite" of thought leaders and decision makers as well as the primary merchandise directors from companies, have been invited.

The GJEPC will be flying these retailers via business class and covering transfers, hotel and meals.

The organization—which represents Indian jewelry manufacturers and designers—is putting together a select group of senior executives from the Indian jewelry-manufacturing sector. In addition to three days of meetings, seminars and facilities tours, the program will include the option for a trip to Agra and the Taj Mahal on the last two days. Bannerot said retailers can opt out of the trip and either head back to the United States or arrange for additional meetings in Mumbai.
